Nationale Nederlanden

Human Capital Planner

At the intersection of design, research, and strategy, I contributed to the development of innovative digital solutions that empower businesses and their employees. My work focused on creating seamless experiences by aligning user needs with technological capabilities and strategic goals. From designing advanced data visualizations to crafting interactive tools, I aimed to deliver impactful products that enhance usability, accessibility, and informed decision-making.

What did I do

As Lead Designer at Nationale Nederlanden, I was responsible for the business portal and played a key role in developing the Human Capital Planner (HCP). The HCP is a powerful online data dashboard that consolidates critical pension and HR insights, such as workforce structure, investment results, and employee engagement with their pensions. It enables companies to compare their data with industry benchmarks, facilitating targeted actions in collaboration with advisors. I contributed to the platform's strategy, conducted research, and supported its development to ensure a seamless and impactful user experience.

Product design

As part of my role, I contributed to the development of the Human Capital Planner (HCP). The platform allows companies to compare their data with industry benchmarks, gain insights into employee decisions, and take targeted action alongside their advisors.

A core focus of my work was translating data into interactive insights, enabling employers to explore potential scenarios and support their employees in making informed decisions. This interactive approach empowered users to make better, data-driven choices for their workforce.

Research

As the Human Capital Planner was a completely new service from Nationale Nederlanden and still in its MVP stage, there was significant uncertainty about user needs and overall strategy. To address this, I conducted various research initiatives, including exploring topics such as sustainability and investments. Through interviews and workshops, we gathered valuable insights and translated them into a clear vision and potential concepts for the platform. The findings were also presented to stakeholders to inform and align them with the project's direction and goals.

Service design

All research were the foundation for aligning the product with user expectations and strategic objectives. Since the product was designed as a service rather than a traditional journey, I translated the insights into an infographic-style format. This approach visually conveyed the story around the topic and the user, making complex information more accessible and engaging for all stakeholders.

04

New features

Building on the service design phase, we connected the strategy to the development of new features. This involved studying the available data and translating it into interactive data visualizations. A key challenge was managing the complexity of background calculations and integrating multiple data sources with the platform. These efforts ensured that the new features provided meaningful, actionable insights to users while maintaining a seamless and intuitive experience.

Color system data visualisation

At Nationale Nederlanden, I identified and addressed the lack of an effective color system for data visualization, which led to issues such as poor contrast and accessibility challenges. To enhance accessibility and comply with web standards (WGA), I conducted research into color usage and developed a new color system aligned with the branding and design guidelines. This palette supports diverse data representation methods, ensures compatibility with various chart types, and improves both usability and visual coherence.
